How to Prevent Mold Damage While You’re on Vacation

8/21/2017 (Permalink)

When many families take summer vacations, they turn up or off their air conditioning.

And it makes sense – it costs a lot of money to keep your home cool. Why pay extra to do it when no one is there?

But before you think about shutting down your AC when you hit the beach for a week, there are a few things you need to consider to prevent mold damage while you’re away.

3 Simple Ways to Prevent Mold Damage While You’re Away

It’s not difficult to prevent mold damage when you’re on vacation. It just means adding a few extra things to your checklist before you leave. Here are three simple tips to help stop mold from growing while you’re out of town.

1. Leave the Air Conditioner Running

It may cost a little more money to leave your AC running while you’re away, but consider how much money and effort it will save you to prevent mold damage in your home. Mold tends to grow when there’s more humidity in the air, and running your air conditioner will help keep your humidity down in your house. Angie’s List recommends you turn up your thermostat four degrees while you are away. For instance, if you normally keep your home set at 74, turn up the temperature to 78 while you are on vacation.

2. Use a Dehumidifier

Not all homes in the Percy Priest and Hickory Hollow areas may have reliable air conditioning, or you might be using window units in some areas of your house that you can’t keep running while you’re away. A simple, not too expensive solution would be a dehumidifier. These devices will cost anywhere from 50 to several hundred dollars, depending on the size and area in which you’ll need to use it.

3. Clean Up Any Water Spills

Where there’s standing water, there’s a greater chance for mold. If you’re like most people, you’re probably pretty busy in the days or hours leading up to your vacation. Make sure you give yourself time to clean up the sink before you leave, especially if you have pots or pans with water in them. Besides coming home to a smelly house, you might come home to discover mold damage.

Also, be sure to have a plan for any appliances that tend to leak, such as a refrigerator.
